Berlin, DE This studio was split into two parts. First was research of a building material (for our group, concrete) and innovative development into a Building Kit. Second was the use of this to develop a residential complex in Berlin, emphasizing modularity and adaptability across sites.
Collaboration within a 4 person group.
Research involved acquainting ourselves with the process of cement production and the material's strengths and weaknesses. Thus we could create a catalog of sorts of different concrete products to maximize a design's capabilities.
We developed a dynamic concrete mould (plywood, screws, acrylic plate) as prototype for the production of curved modular panels on demand and with ease of customization. We were able to cast and cure our own panel with it as a proof of concept.
Implementation of this Building Kit was through the design of a residential complex in Staaken, west Berlin. Use of modular, interchangeable pieces allowed the design to be quickly adaptable and built yet retain character and dynamism.
